Dang Truong Mrs. Carter World Literature November 12, 2016 The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins: Survival The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins is a novel about a teenage girl, Katniss, struggling to survive in the life oppressed by the government. Living with the injustice of the Capitol, Katniss soon develops her own hatred toward the Capitol; by using what she have and striving for the best against it, Katniss is able to hold the odds in her favor. Katniss volunteering in Prim s place in the arena, where she could die at anytime, is an extraordinary sacrifice of a sixteen-year-old girl for her sister. Staying alive in the deadly arena of The Hunger Games, where death is around every corner, is close to impossible. Using relationships to her advantage, having the courage to stand up to tyranny, and staying true to her values lead to Katniss survival in The Hunger Games and sparks a rebellion against the injustice of the Capitol. The author uses the alliance between Katniss and Rue, the connection with Haymitch, her hunting partnership with Gale back home, and the star-crossed love with Peeta during the games to illustrate how the dependence on those relationship lead to the survival of Katniss in the game. The alliance with Rue is very necessary to Katniss because the presence of Rue in the arena reminds Katniss about her sister at home, Prim. She also saves Katniss from the career, and the wounds from the fireball and the tracker-jacker.
